Kubota MX5400DTC clutch cable recall — DTC (gear-drive cab) variant only (CPSC 2025)
Kubota · 2020–2024 · Published
A 2025 CPSC recall affects MX5400DTC tractors only — the 8-speed gear-drive cab variant. The clutch cable can kink or break, preventing the tractor from shifting gears as expected and reducing braking power, posing a crash hazard. Approximately 2,600 units in the U.S. and 180 in Canada, production window February 2020 – December 2024. HST and non-cab variants of the MX5400 are NOT affected by this recall.
Details
## Affected machines — read carefully
This recall is **specific to the MX5400DTC variant only**. The affected configuration:
- **8-speed gear-drive transmission** (NOT HST)
- **55-horsepower Kubota 4-cylinder direct-injection engine**
- **Cab** (NOT open operator station)
- Sold in orange with "KUBOTA" printed in white lettering on the chassis
If your MX5400 has hydrostatic transmission (HST) or no cab, this recall does **not** apply to your tractor. Verify your transmission type and configuration on the data plate or with your dealer before assuming you are or are not affected.
Production window: February 2020 through December 2024. The recall was announced February 20, 2025.
## Issue
The clutch cable for the drive assembly can kink or be damaged. As wear progresses, the cable can break entirely. When this happens during operation, the tractor may not shift gears as expected and the operator's ability to slow or stop the machine is briefly compromised — a crash hazard.
As of the recall date, Kubota had received 30 reports of clutch cable breakage in the U.S. and 3 in Canada. No injuries had been reported, but Kubota issued the recall before any injury occurred.
## What to do
1. Confirm your tractor is the affected MX5400DTC variant (gear drive, cab). If you have an MX5400 HST or open-station configuration, this recall does not apply.
2. If your tractor is the DTC variant, **stop using it immediately** and contact an authorized Kubota dealer for a free inspection and clutch cable repair or replacement.
3. The repair is performed at the dealer's location at no cost. Kubota is contacting all known registered owners directly.

## Library note
The MX5400 row in this catalog is a base model entry that does not distinguish between DTC (gear drive cab) and HST/open-station variants. This bulletin attaches to the base MX5400 row so that DTC owners are notified, but the body text above explicitly scopes the recall to the DTC variant. HST and open-station MX5400 owners can disregard this bulletin without concern.
