Toro · 2012–2013 · Published

Two related CPSC recalls covering the same Toro Z Master Commercial 2000 Series 74141 / 74143 / 74145 SKUs built 2012-2013. ## Affected machines This bulletin covers two related CPSC recalls on the same **Toro Z Master Commercial 2000 Series** 74141 / 74143 / 74145 SKUs: - **CPSC 13-026** (November 27, 2012, initial): about 2,600 units (US) + 31 (Canada). Traction drive belt wears through the fuel tank. Sold January-August 2012. 2012-only serial numbers. - **CPSC 13-187** (May 9, 2013, expansion): about 3,700 units (US) + 60 (Canada). Idler pulley rubs against the fuel tank — closely related root cause family. Sold January 2012 - April 2013. Expanded to 2012+2013 serial numbers. The mowers are red and black. "Toro" and "2000 Series" are printed on the side and "Z Master Commercial" on the front. The model/serial plate is at the front of the mower below the seat (left-hand side per CPSC 13-026; right-hand side per CPSC 13-187 — owners should check both). ### Combined affected serial-number ranges | Model SKU | 2012 serials (CPSC 13-026, 13-187) | 2013 serials (CPSC 13-187 only) | |---|---|---| | 74141 | 312000101 – 312000784 | 313000101 – 313000364 | | 74143 | 312000101 – 312000881 | 313000101 – 313000432 | | 74145 | 312000101 – 312001178 | 313000101 – 313000443 | If your mower's serial begins with **312** it falls under CPSC 13-026 (initial recall, traction drive belt → fuel tank) and may also fall under the expanded CPSC 13-187 (idler pulley → fuel tank) if a 2012-build unit was shipped in 2013. If your serial begins with **313** it falls only under CPSC 13-187. ## Issue Both recalls describe **fuel-tank wear-through from a drivetrain component**: - **Traction drive belt** (CPSC 13-026): the belt rubs against the side of the fuel tank during normal operation, gradually wearing the tank wall thin until fuel begins to leak. - **Idler pulley** (CPSC 13-187): the idler pulley contacts the fuel tank, with the same wear-through outcome. In both cases the result is **fuel leaking near a hot engine**, posing a fire hazard. Reported field incidents: - 6 incidents total (per CPSC 13-187 — count is cumulative across both recalls) - 0 injuries reported ## What to do 1. Check your mower's model SKU and serial number against the table above. 2. If your mower is in scope of either recall, **stop using it immediately**. 3. Contact Toro at (855) 493-0090 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CT to schedule a free repair and/or to check whether the repair has already been made. 4. Toro directly contacted registered owners at the time of both recalls. If you bought the mower used, verify with Toro using your serial number. ## Hazard Severity is rated **critical** because of the fire risk. Fuel leaks near the engine on a commercial-grade zero-turn mower can ignite during normal operation. ## Source - U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, recall 13-026, "Toro Riding Mowers Recalled Due to Fire Hazard," November 27, 2012. - U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, recall 13-187, "Toro Recalls Zero Turn Riding Mowers Due to Fire Hazard," May 9, 2013. - Sold at Toro dealers nationwide from January 2012 through April 2013 for between $7,700 and $8,700. ## Library notes The three affected SKUs (74141, 74143, 74145) are added in this migration as new rows in a 'Z Master 2000 Legacy' model_series, distinct from the current 'Z Master 2000' line in the library (Z Master 2000 60, year_start=2018). The legacy SKUs are 2012-2013 production and represent the prior generation. A single bulletin covers both CPSC numbers because the affected models are identical and the failure mechanism (drivetrain component wearing through the fuel tank) is the same family. Owners reading the bulletin should check the serial-number ranges to determine which CPSC notice technically applies to their machine; the remedy is the same.
