## Affected machines
About **47,800 US units** of Stihl **BR 800 Magnum** backpack blowers, in two variants:
| Model | List price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BR 800 X Magnum | ~$600 | Stationary nozzle, T-handle pull start |
| BR 800 C-E Magnum | ~$700 | Telescoping nozzle, side-pull start handle (start while wearing) |
The backpack blower is **gray and orange**. "STIHL," "BR 800," and either "X" or "C-E" are printed on the rear of the blower. Both variants are powered by a Stihl 4-MIX combustion engine.
### Identifying an affected unit
The recalled blower's serial number is on a **label on the blower tube**. Only blowers with serial numbers in the range **546515117 through 547916107** are in scope.
### Production / sales window
Sold at **authorized Stihl independent dealers nationwide** from **May 2025 through September 2025** per CPSC. (Note: Stihl's own recall page narrows this to July - September 2025; the CPSC notice is the controlling source for this bulletin.)
### Affected models
This bulletin attaches to:
- BR 800 X Magnum
- BR 800 C-E Magnum
Owners should match by **serial number** against the published range — only specific units within the production window are in scope. Other Stihl backpack blower models (BR 200, BR 350, BR 430, BR 600, BR 700) are **not** in scope for this recall.
## Issue
The **fan wheel inside the backpack blower can break apart** during operation. The fan wheel is the centrifugal impeller that generates the air stream — a high-RPM rotating component contained within the blower housing.
If the fan wheel fractures during use, fragments can be ejected through the blower housing or out through the discharge tube, posing a **laceration hazard** to the operator (whose body is directly behind the housing) or to bystanders downstream of the discharge tube.
Reported field incidents at recall time:
- 0 incidents reported
- 0 injuries
The recall was conducted under CPSC's **fast-track** process — a proactive defect notification by Stihl based on Stihl's own quality investigation rather than a response to field injuries.
## What to do
1. Find the **serial number label on the blower tube** of your BR 800 and confirm whether it falls within **546515117 - 547916107**.
2. If your blower is in scope, **stop using it immediately**.
3. Bring the unit to an **authorized Stihl servicing dealer** for a free inspection and replacement of the fan wheel.
4. Or call Stihl Inc. toll-free at **800-233-4729** Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET.

## Hazard
Severity is rated **warning** rather than **critical** because no incidents were reported at recall time. However, the defect involves a **high-RPM rotating component within a thin-walled housing** worn directly against the operator's back — the failure mode is energetic and the laceration potential is significant. Owners should treat this with urgency.
