## Affected machines This bulletin covers three Honda walk-behind lawnmower models that fail mandatory federal safety standards. ### Affected models - **HRB217HXA** - **HRX217HXA** - **HRX217HMA** The lawn mowers are dark gray with a red fan cover. The model and serial number are printed on a label located on the upper rear of the mower deck. Sold at Honda Lawn and Garden dealers and Home Depot stores nationwide from **January 2003 through November 2007** for between $760 and $900. About **167,000 units** are affected. ## Issue The cutting blades **could rotate under power when the control lever is released**. The lawn mowers **do not comply with mandatory federal safety standards for lawn mowers**. A spinning blade in this scenario poses a serious laceration hazard to the operator's hands and feet. Reported field incidents at time of recall: - 0 reports - 0 injuries ## What to do 1. Identify the unit by model number on the upper rear of the deck. 2. **Stop using the lawnmower immediately.** 3. Contact any Honda Lawn and Garden dealer for a free repair. 4. Honda mailed direct notices to registered owners. ## Hazard Severity is rated **critical** despite zero reported incidents because: - The mowers do not comply with mandatory federal safety standards - The defect mode (blade rotation without operator presence) is the exact hazard the federal standard exists to prevent - The recall affects 167,000 units, the largest Honda lawnmower recall by population ## Related bulletins Other Honda lawnmower bulletins in this migration: TNB02600117, TNB02600118, TNB02600119, TNB02600121. ## Source - U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, "American Honda Motor Corp.
