John Deere X300/X300R/X304 Kawasaki FS541V cooling fan failure — fire and burn hazard (CPSC September 2011)

Voluntary recall of about 36,500 John Deere lawn tractors with Kawasaki FS541V engines manufactured between September 20, 2010 and July 21, 2011. The front-mounted engine cooling fan can break; with the fan inoperative the engine overheats and surrounding plastic can melt, creating fire risk. 163 failures reported, 83 with engine melting or fire, 1 minor burn injury.

This recall covers John Deere X300, X300R, and X304 Select Series lawn tractors with Kawasaki FS541V engines manufactured between September 20, 2010 and July 21, 2011. Serial number ranges:

The model number is on both sides of the tractor hood; the serial number is on the machine frame near the front-right tire.
## Hazard
The cooling fan installed on top of the front-mounted Kawasaki FS541V engine can break. If the cooling fan is not operational, the engine can overheat and melt surrounding plastic, creating fire and serious injury risk.
## Remedy
Stop using the mower immediately. Contact a John Deere dealer to arrange for free replacement of the engine cooling fan.
